The film revolves around the mining ship Ishimura as it arrives in the vicinity of an alien world. A survey team from the Ishimura discover an object, which is referred to as the Marker. It is brought aboard the ship by orders of Captain Mathius and Dr. Kyne. A week passes and a rash of violent attacks between the miners and other crew members begin to rise drastically. Tensions rise as members of the religious group, the Unitologists, beg for a glimpse of the Marker, a key icon in their belief.
The film begins with a short Holographic message from Security Officer Chief Alyssa Vincent being recovered and played, but is in bad quality and misses out on the other notes she talks about in the ending. The message ends with the lines “The Ishimura and the Artifact must be Destroyed” replaying before the message fades to black…
